Blonde hair: 11,000 years of love. Appearing suddenly a few millennia ago, they quickly entered legend, mythology and art.

Blonde hair, cross and delight of our time. Platinum blonde, Titian blonde, cool blonde, strawberry blonde, blonde highlights, blonde balayage… the list could go on. Everyone has wished for it at least once, each with a precise vision of their perfect blonde in mind. And yet, we know that going blonde and preserving the colour hasn’t always been a piece of cake (at least until now). Although natural non-blondes often require bleaching treatments and a constant maintenance routine, the fascination with golden locks knows no obstacles on its way.

Thinking about blonde hair, it comes naturally to believe that it was born with us, as one of several genetic options that decree hair colour. But the truth is slightly different. Scientists and scholars from all over the world have come to the conclusion that blonde hair has not always existed: in fact, it would have appeared at some point in our relatively recent history.

Evolution and fortuitousness, as history teaches us, are often inextricable from one another.

The first humans with blonde hair appeared during the last ice age. This was established by genetic research that identified the appearance of the gene responsible for this mutation, dating it to about 11.000 years ago. In all likelihood, admiring those unusual golden strands sparkling in the sun, our ancestors immediately understood that blonde hair was there to stay.

What would have led to the appearance of what would later become the most admired and coveted hair colour in history? Scientifically, there are many hypotheses. One of the most widely accepted theories traces this mutation back to the production of vitamin D: for all human beings, a daily intake of vitamin D, the “sunshine vitamin”, is essential, often called this way because our skin is able to synthesize it autonomously through exposure to UV rays. At latitudes where sun exposure is shorter and less intense, a pale colour of skin and hair would be connected to a greater absorption of sun rays, and therefore would help with the synthesis of vitamin D. This could be one of the reasons for the permanence of this mutation over the millennia, which could have allowed it to cross history up to us, making its appearance in literature and artistic production.

Primal blonde

Another theory would argue that the survival of the blonde gene in our evolutionary history, would be traced back to sexual selection : this hypothesis would seem to give once and for all scientific foundation to the famous saying that, at least during the last ice age, men prefer blondes .

Muses, ladies, saints: all the nuances of blonde hair

Blonde hair has always been associated with positive and “special” characters, because among the Italic, Greek and then Roman populations, a golden hair was anything but common: blonde hair became extremely sought after, to the point that, especially after the first contacts of the Romans with the “barbarian” populations of Northern Europe, Roman women began to dye their hair with a mixture of saffron powder, undergoing an expensive and rather unpleasant procedure, in order to ensure a shiny hair.

From the Middle Ages to the Silver Screen Divas

This fascination continued unaltered until the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance, centuries in which blonde hair became a symbol of high social rank, as well as the highest aesthetic expression. We find traces of it especially in literature and painting. It is enough to think of Petrarch’s sonnets that describe a beautiful Laura with “golden hair scattered in the air”, or of the numerous Renaissance portraits, depicting elegant ladies with very light hair gathered in intricate hairstyles and protected by precious veils.

Sacred art is no less important, depicting saints with their eyes turned to heaven and their faces crowned with flowing blonde hair. It will be like this for centuries to come, in which golden blonde will alternate with other shades of blonde, such as the famous Titian blonde, made great by the renown Italian painter, and characterized by a warmer and coppery hue.

At the beginning of the 20th Century, during the Roaring Twenties, blonde was temporarily put aside in favour of a very short chestnut bob, the distinctive feature of the flapper girl style. The cinema of the 40s and 50s will soon take us back to the origins, with its Hollywood divas of unforgettable beauty, and unfailing golden hair styled in perfect waves. A few years later, Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve and Monica Vitti, with their bangs and straight, voluminous hair, will be the ultimate icons of style and beauty and their blonde hair will set the standard for the look of all the girls of those years.

Blonde nowadays

Today, the quest for the perfect blonde takes advantage of the progress made in professional hair treatments. The world of curly hair is complex and wide. How well do you know your curls? There are different types of curly hair, but the key words are HYDRATION and NUTRITION. There is no denying that Type 4 Natural hair (Curly & Coily) can be temperamental if you do not use the right products.

Without the proper knowledge about your 4 natural hair type, things can become a little challenging when it comes to caring for and styling your hair.

But because no two people (or their curls) are the same, it can take some trial and error to figure out what works best for you. So to simplify the process, we created the easiest routines for every texture, and broke down the best products, to help you create the most gorgeous, natural looking curls⁠.

Type 4 coily hair

COILY HAIR (TYPE 4)

This curly hair pattern is often also called “afro-textured” or “tight spiral”, and it is characterised by an extremely dense pattern, high porosity, and fragility. The curl can vary, ranging from tight to very tight, becoming increasingly defined as the curvature varies. Hair type 4, also widely known as coily hair, might look very dense and robust, but they are actually the most fragile and have a dry texture with the fewest cuticle layers. Coily hair tends to be very dry, and it breaks more easily and can appear less defined due to its very tight S to Z pattern.

Type 4 hair textures have a flat diameter and do not grow as quickly compared to an oval Caucasian hair texture. The main concerns about these textures are dryness, breakage and shrinkage.⁠

Why in-salon image consulting is a vital step and how to understand the client’s desires and evaluate together the shapes and proportions of face and body. For the hair and beauty industry the consultation is essential to achieving a positive and memorable visit with a client. It sets the tone for the client’s entire experience and helps to determine the trust level your client will have with you.

Before even getting started with the hair washing, it is a good practice to engage in an image consultation with the client. This will allow the professional to understand the client’s desires and expectations, and relate them to the shapes and colors of her face and body proportions. It is also a great way to gather further informations about who we are talking to, their habits, interests, lifestyle in general, and not least how they consider their hair and how they approach self-care. All of this informations prove invaluable in fine tuning our subsequent professional proposal, and increasing our chances of fulfilling our client’s request.

Communication: the first step

Good communication is an important part of any self-respecting relationship, including that between a hairdresser and his clients. Knowing what her expectations are, what colors she feels enhance her most, and how she feels most comfortable are questions that can disclose valuable informations before proceeding.

Skipping this step means risking to perform a cut and color that are technically perfect, but not what the client wanted, or feels most confident with. This is a classic hairdresser faux pas, which can lead to the client leaving the salon for good and resort to another hairdressers.

Another great way to understand the client’s desires is to look at a lookbook or reference images together, showing the style, cut or color she would like to achieve.

Practice observing

Before having the client put on the protective cape, it is important to observe her as a whole, to get a sense of her overall style, her demeanor and thus her personality. It is also very important to observe the hair in order to understand the treatments it has undergone, its texture, thickness, growth side, etc. All this informations must be taken into account when we propose a treatment or hair intervention to the client.

Clarity is fundamental

Once all this information has been acquired, we enter into the operational part of the consultation: the proposal of the look. When we explain to the client what we think would be ideal for her hair and her proportions, let’s make sure that our words are not misunderstood: requests such as “lighten”, or “warm color” or “even cut” are too vague and may not have the same meaning for us as for the client.

Once the request has been clarified, the advice is to repeat one last time what we are going to do and the look that will be created. This will be useful to detect any last-minute misunderstandings and avoid disappointment for both the client and the hairdresser.

Last tip? Prepare a personal card for each customer, on which to note the requests and the looks or treatments carried out each time, so as not to lose track of the history of the individual customers, and to better understand their desires.

The holiday season is just around the corner, which means the hot weather will soon be upon us. While Summer is known for being a season of carefree fun in the sun, did you know that it can also be the most damaging season for our hair? Ironically, humidity and wet weather tends to make frizzy hair worse. That’s because dry hair tries to absorb moisture out of the air, causing each hair’s cuticle, or outer layer, to swell up, instead of lying flat. The cuticle comprises overlapping scales, which separate and rise in moist air. This makes hair look frizzy.

Tis the season to avoid bad hair days! Or at least try to. Getting ready can feel like such an ordeal, but it doesn’t have to be this way with these holiday hair hacks.

1. Protect your Hair with Organic hair treatments

There are shampoos that contain UV protection, but most of those are chemical-laden, conventional shampoos that I’d recommend avoiding. One quick way to add some protection to your hair is try using a hair Shampoo & Conditioner that helps protect your hair from mechanical stress, pollution and dyes. 2. Moisturise hair weekly with a Hair Mask or Deep Conditioning

To protect your hair from fading and drying out due to the sun you’ll want to keep them protected all season long. Wear a fashionable floppy hat or a stunning silk scarf. The fact is you have to protect your hair the same way you’d protect your skin from the sun if you want it to look its best. A hat reduces damage caused by wind, especially if your hair is prone to tangling, and protects colour-treated hair.

7. Take time to Pamper Yourself!

Carve a half hour out of your week to light some candles, draw a bath, and put on a hair mask. Relaxing during this hectic season is so important. Stress can lead to hair loss, so you’re really multitasking while you kick back and let your hair mask do it’s thing.
